ACT / Surveys in Latin America provide key recommendations for increased awareness about foodborne AMR
The Action to support implementation of Codex AMR texts (ACT) project aims to raise awareness about responsible and prudent use of antimicrobials in the food production chain. The project is being implemented in six countries, including Bolivia and Colombia. Awareness surveys were conducted to establish baseline knowledge on AMR and antimicrobial use among producers, professionals, and animal health technicians. The results showed that most professionals and technicians in the plant and animal production sector had a general knowledge of AMR and a basic understanding of its characteristics. However, there was a need for reinforcement across all groups. In the animal production sector, over half of respondents recognized the importance of a veterinarian’s instructions, but many indicated preventive use for diseases or use without veterinary guidance. The importance of final disposal and environmental precautions was also emphasized. Official institutions and professional associations play a crucial role in providing information on AMR, highlighting the need for awareness and training.
